Resins

What is Resin?

Resin is a chemically organic compound that can be used as a bonding agent. Resins are widely used in building as adhesives, coating or as a construction material when a strong bond is required.

What are the benefits of Resin?
  • Ability to turn from a liquid into a customisable solid, creating a strong structure when reinforced with fibre glass, creating what is known as GRP. GRP is a compound used as an alternative to steel, concrete and iron, possessing a lot of the same benefits while being 90% lighter and non-corrosive. To find out more information about GRP, please see our “What is GRP?” article.
  • Highly durable

What is Craft Resin Used For?

Craft resin can be used to create jewellery, sculptures, trinkets, decorative boards, art work and timber table tops. This is only to name a handful of things.

What is the best wood to use to create a timber resin table top?

Resin timber table tops have gained in popularity recently, if you are looking to create one yourself, we recommend using either Yew, Elm or Black Walnut. Before creating your table, check the timber is properly aired so the moisture level is below 20%. If you do not let your wood air, you increase the risk of the resin top coat coming our cloudy, not the glossy glass look you are going for. Alternatively, a cloudy finish can be caused by humidity in the air, this happens far less, and usually only in warmer environments.

What is the best type of resin to use for creating Craft Resin Table Tops?

The two best resins to consider when working with wood are, Table Top Epoxy Resin & Deep Pour Resin. Table Top Epoxy Resin is perfect for covering both large and small timber table tops. After applying a single coat and leaving to cure, your timber surface will be covered in a 1/8 inch layer of resin.

When selecting your resin of choice, you should first look for a thinner consistency resin, this way the resin will bond and fill in the wood’s pores, making the sticking process more effective. Once this has been done, using a thicker more syrupy Resin can be used to create the glossy surface layer. It’s very important that you give your resin time to cure once it has been applied, if you don’t this can result in a sticky finish. Other ways this happens are if you use improper mixing techniques, use the wrong resin to hardener ratio and contamination of the surface.

What is Resin Hardener?

The epoxy resin process consists of two parts, the first part is the resin and the second part is the hardener. Both of these goes hand in hand and are just as important as each other during the creation of a good resin.

Resin hardener is used during the curing process, this involves leaving the resin to set and harden. The hardener chemically reacts with the resin, turning it from a liquid into a solid, creating a thermoset material. The ratio for resin to hardener should be 2:1, 2 parts resin to one part hardener.

The best resin hardeners for epoxy resin include, Aliphatic, Cycloaliphatic and aromatic amines. Depending on the resin hardener you use, it will affect how quickly or slowly the resin will react with the hardener. This allows you to have some control over the resins finish, such as, the strength, transparency and hardness of the resin.

What is Roof resin used for?

As the name would suggest, roof resin is used on roofs. It can be used as a base layer for roofs or to seal any cracks and breaks,

The benefits of roof resin when mixed with an appropriate catalyst creates a waterproof, fire retardant laminate roofing structure. Once the roof resin is applied, a topcoat will be required to create a seamless waterproof and aesthetic barrier.

Due to its waterproofing properties and ease of application, roof resin has also been known to fix small holes in polyester boats.

Applying roof resin doesn’t require any large or fancy machinery, it can simply just be applied, making it easier and safer to install.

What is Topcoat Resin?

Topcoats resin is a protection layer of resin used to waterproof fibreglass flat roofing.

They are formulated to provide good adherence to the undercoats offering additional Protection from the weather, in addition to adding an offering a nice aesthetic finish.

A topcoat is not required but it is highly recommended due to its many benefits.

In addition to being used on roof tops, topcoat resin can be used on epoxy resin art, it helps to prevent unwanted bubbles, hide any small specs that may have fallen into your resin and adds a nice glossy finish, the perfect finishing touch to your art.goes here...

What is Vinyl Ester Resin?

Vinyl ester resins are known for their superior resistance to water and various chemicals, surpassing that of Polyester resins. As a result, they are commonly utilized in a wide range of applications including pipelines, chemical storage tanks, and boat construction.

What is the shelf life of Resin?

Once opened, it is recommended that you should use the Resin within 6 months. If unopened, resin can last up to 12 months, as long as it’s stored within the correct environment such as a warehouse or garage. Exposure to the sun and other elements may shorted the life span of resin.

How fast do you deliver?

Once your ordered is placed we aim to have your products at your door within 3-5 working days. If shipping abroad please allow 7 – 14 working days.

Once applied and hardened how long does Epoxy Resin last?

If applied correctly, cured Epoxy resin will last up to 7 years before needing an additional coat to touch up. Once the new coat is applied, it should look brand new, once again! A big factor is the environment your resin is used in, for example if it’s exposed to harsh weather conditions or lots of foot traffic it may need touching up after 5 years, instead of 7.

How do you get bubbles out of Resin?

If the resin has not yet cured, your best option is to use a Propane Torch or Heat Gun, this will warm up the affected area and should remove any bubbles.

If the resin has already cured, your best bet is to use sandpaper to remove any bubbles on the surface area.

Why is my Epoxy resin sticky?

This occurs when your resin has not been mixed proper with the correct ratio. The correct mixing ratio for Resin is usually 1:1 or 2:1. To avoid this happening, make sure to read the bottle and follow the recommended mixing ratio.

What materials does Epoxy Resin NOT stick to?

Resin will stick to most materials but the strength of the bond will vary. To increase the chance of bonding you can apply a thin layer of resin beforehand to act as a foundation for the rest of your resin to bind to. We only recommend not bonding reins to the following materials:

  • Silicon,
  • Anything with a greasy surface
  • Polyethylene plastics
  • Wax
  • Carpet
  • Flute board
  • Wax paper
  • Wet surfaces
What surfaces work well with Resin?

All of the following surfaces react well with resin and create a strong bond:

  • Photographs
  • Paper, just make sure the paper is high quality, otherwise, the resin could be absorbed into it causing damage.
  • Wood
  • Guitar body
  • Jewellery – If you have a mould, resin can be used to fill the mould, creating your desired design.
  • Cement
  • Oil paints (When dried out properly) please allow up to 72 hours to guarantee the oil paint has dried thoroughly. If the oil paint is wet then the resin will not stick to the surface.
  • Countertops / Worktops – resin is well known for being a great material to use on worktops because of the clean, shiny finish it adds. If you want a protective layer over the surface (Which we recommend) please apply a top coat layer. This will avoid the surfaces getting damaged or scratched.
  • Aluminium / Metals – Resin will bond well with most metals. But, it is essential to prep the surface beforehand. You can do this by simply sanding down the surface of your chosen metal.
  • Flooring – Similarly to counter tops the same practices applies. Once the resin has cured, you will need to add a protective top coat to ensure the floor does not scratch. Once set, this will make the resin floor far more durable and protected.
Is craft resin safe to touch food?

Yes, once hardened craft resin can be in contact with food and won’t cause any harm to you.

What safety precautions should I take when working with Resin?

Wear gloves, resin can be a very sticky substance to work with, to avoid making a mess we recommend to use gloves at all times. If un-hardened resin does touch your skin it could potentially cause some irritation. If the resin does touch your skin, do not worry too much. Simply, wash it off under the tap with some soap.

Work in a well ventilated area such as outside or in an open space. If working in one of these two spaces in not available then we recommend wearing a respirator.

Wear protective goggles / glasses. This is not essential but it does act as another area of protection when working with Resin. If you do get resin in your eye, thoroughly wash it under the tap without rubbing the resin in and seek medical attention immediately.

How should I store Resin?

Resin should be stored in a cool and dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep it on a high shelf or somewhere safe, away from pets and children.

Can Epoxy Resin be used outdoors?

Yes, resin is suitable to be used outdoors. But, some reins are far better equipped to deal with sunlight and weather conditions. If you are looking to use resins for a project outside, it may be worth looking into UV protective resin, this will help the resin to withstand UV from the sun without any change of colouring.

How do I mix resin properly?

Using a wide-edged instrument or spatula, ensure that you meticulously scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing jug to guarantee no unreacted material is left. It is important to mix the ingredients slowly to prevent excessive air from being incorporated into the mixture, which could result in the formation of bubbles. Any bubbles that do form will typically disappear on their own or can be eliminated by gently applying heat. It is recommended to transfer the resin mixture into additional cups, as a precautionary measure, in case the resin on the sides and bottom of the original container is not thoroughly mixed.

Can you apply multiple layers of Resin?

Applying an additional layer of resin onto an already existing resin surface layer is very common practise. In order to do this, make sure the hardened resin layer is clean. The new resin layer will attach to the previous layer of resin without any issues.

Can I colour resin?

You can make resin whatever colour you desire by adding a pigment colour to your mix.

How do I fix sticky resin?

If your resin becomes sticky, remove as much of the stickiness as possible, then apply another resin layer on top. You resin becomes sticky due to it not being mixed correctly or using the right resin to hardener ratio.
